U2 - 20th Anniversary “Atomic Bomb” Box Set coming in Fall 2024 (2024)

Hi, below are the credits. As far as we know Duncan Stewart is the engineer who has been working with the band to re-record overdubs and additional parts. So his involvement typically means new overdubs. Based on the credits, this is what I would say:

"Picture of You (X+W)": This has no additions. It's a different mix/edit than the previously published Xanax and Wine version (as part of "The complete U2)".
"Evidence of Life": I wonder about this one, because no original producers are involved. I guess this is a HTDAAB demo by the Edge that was recorded before the going into the studio. I wonder if now they have added all the vocals or whether they were there in the first place.
"Luckiest Man in the World": The chorus has been resung with new lyrics (some lyrics have been punched in as well in some lines) and new backing vocals have been added as well. I actually think the new lyrics are better, although Bono's voice in the chorus sounds very scratchy and it has lost a bit of the original Mercy's "stream of consciousness" feel that was quite charming.
"Treason": Some additions have been made to this, although it's difficult to know what they are.
"I Don't Wanna See You Smile": No additions made, this is identical to Smile (part of "The complete U2")
"Country Mile" : Some additions have been made, no idea which parts.
"Happiness": Same thing.
"Are You Gonna Wait Forever?" : Identical to b-side. This is clearly from the ATYCLB versions, but was used as a b-side because it served as a blue-print for the new HTDAAB material.
"Theme from 'The Batman'": recorded by Edge at home, no new additions.
"All Because of You" (2) : This is the same Chris Thomas-produced version from 'The complete U2", but with added Edge harmony vocals and backing vocals. Edge actually explained this in a recent interview. Bono was uncomfortable with his vocal and asked Edge to double it. It's a nice effect and you can see how the addional overdubs are not always a bad thing. I like the new chorus backing vocals less, although I see that they are trying to balance out the weird structure of the chorus in this version.

I am not a fan of U2 messing around with their old material to make new "hybrid" songs. I would prefer it if they left these songs and instrumentals alone as historical artefacts. I really dislike Wave of sorrow, think Angels too close to the ground is not interesting, and I find the released versions of Heaven and Hell (it did not need crappy new vocals and lame guitar overdubs, it was perfect as it was!) and Blow your house down underwhelming. For the record, I do however like Oh Berlin and Disappearing act.

So I would have preferred to get real outtakes from the time. Having said that, the additions made here seem to be relatively tasteful and in keeping with the original spirit of the album. So it's still a good listen.
