Sword & Shield: The Best Pokemon For Water-Type Runs (2024)

Since the release of Sword & Shield’s first expansion, the Isle of Armor DLC, many players may be thinking “What else is there to do?” For these bored trainers, starting a new file with a mono-type team will add the spice they are so desperately craving.

Mono-type runs have always been appealing to fans of the series, as solo-typing adds a new layer of difficulty. Add that to the optional rulesets of no switching out after defeating a Pokemon, and the relative ease of Sword & Shield can pose quite the challenge. For any player considering an all-Water-type run, it is crucial to know the Pokemon they should have going into the game so that they don’t waste spots on their limited six Pokemon team.

So, it makes sense for players to return to a previous entry and give that game another playthrough while they patiently await the release of the next main entry in the franchise, Pokemon Legends Z-A. Gamers can also switch things up and add a twist to their playthrough if they wish. 25 Drednaw

Drednaw was a brand-new Pokemon for Sword & Shield, and it is a decent option to use in the game, being able to be found early on as it’s pre-evolved form Chewtle. It has a fantastic Attack stat, so it will benefit from physical Water-type moves such as Razor Shell, Liquidation, or Waterfall. It can also benefit from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) Rock-type attacks, which will help to deal with any Ice, Flying, Fire, or Bug enemies.

This Pokemon does have a 4x weakness to Grass, so it is best to avoid the type at all costs, although it can learn Ice-type moves by TM or Poison Jab. Ability-wise, this 'mon has three great ones. Strong Jaw increases the attack of its biting moves (Bite, Crunch, Ice Fang, & Jaw Lock). Shell Armor protects it from Critical Hits (vital for a nuzlocke), and Swift Swim will make it faster in the rain.

Another Pokemon that is new for Generation 8, Barraskewda, is the evolved form of Arrokuda, and it is another Pokemon that is a star Water-type in the game. With breathtaking Speed and Attack, this Pokemon can hit hard and fast, leaving any opposing Ground, Rock, or Fire types in ruins.

Its hidden ability is the signature ability of this evolution line, and Propeller Tail will ignore the effects of abilities and moves that draw in the target, such as Follow Me or Storm Drain. It is lacking in the defensive department, but if the Pokemon it is facing is weak enough, it won't get a chance to attack.

The behemoth of a Pokemon that is known as Wailord was introduced in Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire in Generation 3 and later made the jump up to Pokemon Sword & Shield. Where this whale excels is being an effective wall. Its staggering 170 HP stat means that it will take a lot to get this 'mon down.

Its Attack and Special Attack are also pretty decent, but a move that should be taught to this Pokemon is Rest, which will allow it to gain its HP back fully. This is an awesome strategy for Pokemon with high HP. It will take a lot to chip that HP down, and it will be so annoying for opponents to get their HP back up.

Known for its exploits in the anime as part of Ash's final Pokemon team, which won him the Master's Eight Tournament, Dracovish is still an awesome Pokemon to use in-game. It comes with all-around decent stats and an emphasis on Defense, HP, and Attack.

As a Water/Dragon-type Pokemon, it has both of Water's weaknesses countered by the Dragon typing, but it does leave it with a weakness to Dragon and Fairy. Its signature move, Fishious Rend, can be boosted by the Strong Jaw ability, which will make for a powerful move to use in battle. Gamers will have to get past the hideous design (although it is intentional) and be prepared to use a very solid Water-type Pokemon in Sword & Shield.

Starmie was a Pokemon that was introduced in the Expansion Pass for Pokemon Sword & Shield, so gamers will have to head over to the Isle of Armor in order to pick up a Starmie (or its pre-evolution, Staryu) to use in a playthrough of Galar. It will be worth the extra work, as it is one of the best Water-type Pokemon.

The Water/Psychic type has an amazing and diverse movepool, capable of learning Thunderbolt, Dazzling Gleam, and Grass Knot, moves not normally found on Water types. With STAB, Psychic-type moves, like Psychic and Psycho Cut, also in its arsenal, it is an offensive beast and definitely one to try out in a playthrough.

This Pokemon has the benefit of only being weak to one type, Grass. This is thanks to its Ground secondary typing, which also means it gains an advantage with STAB moves such as Earthquake and Dig.

Aside from speed, this Pokemon is well-rounded with a greater bias towards HP, Defense, and Attack. This 'mon can take hits well but also dish them out, and it is fairly common in Galar, so it won't be too hard to locate. Its Water Absorb ability is also helpful, as Water moves (which it is neutral to) cannot damage it, and it also gains back some HP.

What this octopus has going for it in a Sword & Shield playthrough is its varied moveset. It can learn Flamethrower, Psychic, Sludge Bomb, Energy Ball, and Rock Blast - all varied moves that are unique for a Water-type.

Although this Pokemon may be slow, it makes up for it with its offensive stats, with 105 apiece for both forms of attack. Being a mixed attacker, gamers can mold Octillery into whatever they need best in their teams. With Sword & Shield's version of movesets, players can even switch out their moves for each major battle.

Gamers were outraged when only Charmander was available in the base game of Sword & Shield, and fans of Squirtle and Bulbasaur were left bewildered. This was amended in the Isle of Armor expansion in the game, available as a starter Pokemon in the Master Dojo.

With this available early on when starting a new game, Squirtle can be used basically from the off. Blastoise has a big plus compared to other Water types, as it can Gigantamax, which means it gains another form when used in a Dynamax battle. Blastoise is a fan-favorite and one of the best Water types to use in Pokemon Sword & Shield.

Wishiwashi has the unique ability of Schooling. This means that when its HP is above 25%, it turns into its School Form, which boosts its stats. It turns into a Legendary Pokemon, and with its 620 Base Stat Total, using Wishiwashi is a bit of a cheat code.

Gamers won't have a problem with locating this 'mon either, as it is very common throughout the watery areas of the Galar region, and finding one will be worth it. It can strike hard with its 140 Special Attack STAB boosted Hydro Pump to decimate opponents, especially those weak to water like Fire, Rock, or Ground types.

As Tentacruel has been around since the beginning. ome fans may overlook it, but in reality, Tentacruel is a beast in-game. It operates as a special defense tank but can strike hard with a solid attack and great speed. It's an octopus that can chip away at opponents.

It also benefits from being part Poison-type, using STAB moves such as Poison Jab and Sludge Wave. The evolved form of Tentacool can also learn Acid Armor, which can boost its defense by two stages. Also, with Supersonic at its disposal to confuse opponents, Tentacruel can have a pretty awesome moveset.

Catching an Eevee can lead to several different options when it comes to its evolutions. One great way to go is Vaporeon, as it is an amazing Water-type to use in the games.

Vaporeon has unbelievable HP at 130 and a 110 special attack to back it up. This 'mon is a beast, and it will take a lot to take it down. It can learn Acid Armor and Aqua Ring, which can be effective in stalling out its opponents and wearing them down slowly. It can strike hard with a Hydro Pump while the enemy chips away slowly.

Vaporeon's Base Stats:

14 Inteleon

As far as Pokemon starters go, Inteleon isn't the favorite among the Pokemon community. Nonetheless, it is an amazing Water-type 'mon to use in Sword & Shield. But, of course, it cannot be caught in the game. Players must choose Sobble as their starter to use its final evolution.

What sets Inteleon aside is its ability to Gigantamax, which gives this Pokemon a new form when it Dynamaxes in certain battles. As this Pokemon is based on James Bond, its Giganatamax form is atop a sniper tower. Its best stat is its 125 special attack, and with its signature move, Snipe Shot, it can cause some real damage in the Galar region.

Golisopod was Pokemon : Sun and Moon’s new and improved Gyarados. Starting as Wimpod, a frail little bug with a tendency to flee from danger, it evolves into the Goliath damage dealer Golisopod, a Bug/Water type.

With access to powerful improved Bug-type attacks in Leech Life and First Impression, and the powerful Physical Water-type attack, Liquidation, Golisopod is a physical staple for any Water team. Boasting solid stats with a 125 attack and a whopping 140 defense, this bug brings a much-needed physical presence for any trainer building a team full of Water-type Pokemon.

With all the different Water-types introduced over the years, it's easy to overlook some of the older members of the roster. Kingdra is a Water/Dragon-type that can be an asset to any party. Aside from mediocre HP, Kingdra sports some impressive base stats.

Its Attack, Defense, and Specials all come in at 95, with its Speed stat being a little lower at 85. Kingdra's learnset leans heavily towards Special moves, though players can make up for the lack of diversity by tracking down the ideal TRs for it. Kingdra can learn some incredibly powerful Ice, Water, Dragon, and Normal-type moves by TR. Any trainer wanting to add Kingdra to their party should be sure of just how they want to utilize it.

Any trainer attempting a Water-type exclusive run should at least consider getting themselves a Gyarados. Training and evolving Magikarp can be a tedious task, but it is a process that pays off almost immediately with this Water/Flying type.

Sadly, Mega Gyarados isn't a factor in Gen 8. Even so, Gyarados is too good of a Water-type to ignore. Special Attack is its lone weak point, with the rest of Gyarados' stats holding up well. A diverse learnset gives players tons of different ways to build up their ideal Gyarados, and its various resistances will put trainers at ease with most matchups.

One of the best Water Pokemon in Sword and Shield, players can find Milotic roaming around quite a few areas in the Galar region, which is great for those looking to add powerful Water-types to their party. If Milotic proves to be too hard to find, trainers can rest assured that Feebas is even more common and not all that hard to evolve, either.

Trainers would do well to take advantage of Milotic's high Special Attack stat. Any physical move in its move pool is wasted with its low base Attack. Finding a Milotic with the Competitive Ability and teaching it a couple of choice Special Moves can take some of the pressure off of any Water-type exclusive run.

When looking for the best Water Pokemon in Sword and Shield, trainers can't overlook this Gen 1 Water/Ice-type standout. Lapras has been a longtime series favorite, and its popularity isn't solely credited to its design or its role in the anime.

As far as Water-type Pokemon go, Lapras is an underrated option that players can find roaming all around the Galar region. Its four type weaknesses do raise a few red flags, but Lapras would still serve most trainers well in any Water-type exclusive party. The fact that it has a Gigantamax Form makes it an especially savvy choice for trainers traversing through the Galar region.

The Water/Poison-type pincushion Toxapex is one of the best walls in Pokemon : Sword and Shield. Toxapex is effective because of the way it utilizes the game's core mechanics to its advantage. With great defensive typing and an incredible hidden ability in Regenerator, Toxapex becomes almost unbeatable.

This sea critter's defensive stats are unmatched at 152 Defense and 142 Special Defense. On top of that, with moves like Recover, an unfailing Toxic, and Haze, Toxapex becomes a mainstay for any Water-type team. As far as stalls go, Toxapex just can’t be beaten.

With Stealth Rock, access to both Physical and Special Attack options, and solid abilities, trainers will be singing the praises of their powerful new Seismitoad.

What sets this frog apart from other Water/Ground-types is its decent Speed stat. Most Pokemon with the same typing simply lack the speed to remain a viable option throughout the game. While Seismitoad is no speed demon, it certainly will get the job done.

Added into the game through the Isle of Armor DLC, Sharpedo reclaims its old title of “papa shark.” With 120 base Attack, the Water/Dark type Sharpedo is a physical force that every Water-type team desperately needs. Its high Attack stat makes Aqua Jet an incredibly powerful attack with Priority to boot.

Furthermore, its Speed Boost ability means that, for every turn Sharpedo can stay alive out on the field, its speed will increase by 1 tier. It’s everything a trainer could want from a shark that acts like a torpedo.
